Elwood-John H. Glenn High School’s girls volleyball team put in an incredible effort to support breast cancer awareness and research during October. First, the student athletes teamed up with members of the National Honor Society to participate in the annual Breast Cancer Awareness Walk at Jones Beach. Next, the team successfully raised $1,000 for breast cancer research through their annual Dig Pink game, to be presented to the Islip Breast Cancer Coalition.
“It was inspiring to see our students join forces to support a vital cause and demonstrate their commitment to community service,” Assistant Principal Lindsay Fritch said. “We are very proud of the team for demonstrating exceptional sportsmanship and dedication to supporting such an important cause.”
Continuing the theme, the high school also welcomed a guest speaker from the Maurer Foundation last month. The expert presented a vital, comprehensive session on breast health awareness. Key topics included separating “myths and facts” about breast cancer, identifying risk factors, and the role of nutrition and exercise in health. Students were also educated on methods of early detection, including breast imaging and performing clinical and self-breast exams.
“We thank the Maurer Foundation for providing our students with this critical, life-saving information,” Fritch said.
