Elwood-John H. Glenn High School was recently awarded a $,3000 grant from the Suffolk County Soil and Water Conservation District to establish an organic vegetable garden with surrounding native pollinator garden. With this SCSWCA funding, as well as support from the Elwood Booster Club and the Northport Native Garden Initiative, the school purchased materials necessary to transform the courtyard into a garden that will produce food for use in John Glenn’s family and consumer science classes and will be freely available for students and their families.  

As the first step in the courtyard transformation, students worked on Aug. 21 to lay out cardboard to kill existing grass and weeds, move soil to fill in the old pond and put together ten 4x8 raised garden beds, guided by teacher Richard Greening. The school plans to eventually add another ten 3x6 beds, providing plenty of space to plant a wide variety of crops throughout the year.
