The Elwood-John H. Glenn varsity boys soccer team secured the Long Island Class A championship on Nov. 6 with a hard-fought 2-1 victory over defending state champions Floral Park High School.

The team displayed extraordinary character throughout the contest. Trailing at halftime, the Knights fought back with incredible spirit. Key plays included Cooper Kassan leveling the score off a perfectly placed cross from junior Jesse Columbo, followed by the decisive late-game goal where a throw in from senior Peter Bell found Jesse Columbo for the go-ahead score in the final seven minutes against Floral Park. Throughout the match, the Knights exemplified the true essence of athletics: grit, sportsmanship, hustle and sheer determination.

"We must also take a moment to offer sincere appreciation to every member of the community, parent and student who attended the game," Director of Athletics Dave Shanahan said. "Your presence created an electric atmosphere that fueled the team to victory. Superintendent Dr. Steele commented that this powerful, positive energy certainly played a vital role in the win. Thank you for showing your Elwood Pride!"

The Knights' journey continues as they advance to the New York State quarterfinal round tomorrow at 11 a.m. against Rye High School. This game will take place at Yorktown High School.

"We wish Coach Hanner and Coach Reilly the very best of luck this Saturday," Shanahan said. "If you are available, please join us at Yorktown to cheer our team onward."

Elwood-John H. Glenn High School’s girls volleyball team put in an incredible effort to support breast cancer awareness and research during October. First, the student athletes teamed up with members of the National Honor Society to participate in the annual Breast Cancer Awareness Walk at Jones Beach. Next, the team successfully raised $1,000 for breast cancer research through their annual Dig Pink game, to be presented to the Islip Breast Cancer Coalition.

“It was inspiring to see our students join forces to support a vital cause and demonstrate their commitment to community service,” Assistant Principal Lindsay Fritch said. “We are very proud of the team for demonstrating exceptional sportsmanship and dedication to supporting such an important cause.”

Continuing the theme, the high school also welcomed a guest speaker from the Maurer Foundation last month. The expert presented a vital, comprehensive session on breast health awareness. Key topics included separating “myths and facts” about breast cancer, identifying risk factors, and the role of nutrition and exercise in health. Students were also educated on methods of early detection, including breast imaging and performing clinical and self-breast exams.

“We thank the Maurer Foundation for providing our students with this critical, life-saving information,” Fritch said.
